Meet Richard Vaughan

Younity New Zealand began their sponsorship as a Funding Partner seven years ago after Richard read about the work of Duffy Books in Homes (DBIH) and thought it was a great initiative – putting books where they’re most needed and being able to make the biggest impact with their donation.

“We became a Funding Partner in the early days of our company” says Richard. “Our values and purpose aligned well (and still do) with the programme – ensuring our community thrives, with a focus on children. The learning aspect of reading and driving the curiosity of children to learn fits hand in glove with our value system. Our sponsorship allows us to directly impact the future of this generation of children with reading material that they wouldn’t normally have access to.”

Younity New Zealand also have a close relationship with their sponsored schools. “We have a good relationship with the schools we sponsor and always have at least one team member who goes along to the role model assemblies. It’s a great opportunity to connect with the school and chat with the children and meet the role model.”

Richard says to those curious about becoming a Funding Partner, “You won’t regret it. If you want a better understanding of your donation, what it can do, and want to see the impact of your donation, this is the perfect opportunity. Equally, if you have a dollar to donate, this is a good place to park it.”

Melissa Dines is the CEO of The Dines Family Charitable Trust. One of the goals of The Dines Family Charitable Trust is to advance education and Melissa thought the Duffy Books in Homes programme was a good fit. She’s also a member of the Board of Trustees for Massey High School who run a ‘Summer Reading’ programme for students and she believes that these two programmes complement each other.

Melissa firmly believes in the importance that reading has in activating your imagination. “I love the whole concept of books in homes and while literacy is the key goal there are even more benefits than reading – there’s the creative side of it too, as we draw images in our minds as we read.”

Melissa says: “If you’re thinking about becoming a funding partner you should just go for it as it’s rewarding on so many levels. The joy the kids get from the books and the involvement with the school and students really gives you those warm fuzzy feelings.”

Robyn-ann Rumney became involved with Duffy Books in Homes as a funding partner when their son started working for Duffy. She’d always known about Duffy and the primary school her kids had attended was a Duffy school so she knew what Duffy was about. However, it wasn’t until her son started working at Duffy Books in Homes, that her and her husband Lyall decided to become more involved with Duffy Books in Homes and become funding partners.

Their business Thompson Lawnmowers & Chainsaws in Rotorua, sponsors two local rural schools in the Rotorua area and they’ve sponsored the schools for over 3 years. As well as being a funding partner, sponsoring 50% of the cost of the books for both schools, Robyn-ann also tries to go along to the Role Model assemblies and see the kids receive their books.

Robyn-ann is a huge reader herself and believes it’s important that every child is exposed to reading early and how that builds their life experience. She says, “As an avid reader and after encouraging my boys to become readers, it was a no-brainer really to support Duffy and the work they do. We’re in a position to be able to help our local country schools and it’s such a worthwhile cause, we wish we could do more”.

She says to anyone thinking about becoming a sponsor/funding partner, “Do it! It is absolutely worth every penny. We often receive lovely letters from the kids who receive books and it’s wonderful to be able to visit the schools during the Role Model assemblies and see the kids receive their books.”
